Coffee and Christianity

Coffee and Jesus

September 25, 2018 by Ben

There is something very special about an early morning, a cup of coffee and an open Bible.  I enjoy these moments before the kids wake up, before the phone rings and before the busy world throws all it can at me.

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Rom 12:2 ESV

I want the Word of God to be the first influence on my spirit when I wake up.  If you think about it there are so many things competing for our attention only moments after you open your eyes.  I have learned to silence those distractions and go straight to the Word.  I don’t check my phone, social media, the news, the fridge or even the weather.  I need this time each morning to fellowship with Jesus.

Today’s reading is Galatians chapter 4.

What stood out to me the most was verse 8 and 9. Paul said to the Galatians:

8. Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to those that by nature are not gods. 9 But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world, whose slaves you want to be once more? Gal 4:8-9 ESV

The Galatians came from a background of idol worship and false gods.  Verses like this remind me of how important it is to prioritize God above all things and also to recognize social media and other distractions can become objects of worship and idolatry.  As Christians, it would be foolish to allow anything to come between us and Jesus. Seek the Lord first always.

Heavenly Father, thank you for this opportunity to fellowship with you each morning.
– In Jesus name, Amen

Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love,
that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. Psalm 90:14 ESV
